Adoption & Re-Homing

Adoption Process

Thank you for considering a beautiful rescue animal to become the newest member of your household.

Our number one priority is to ensure the welfare of our animals. This means finding a forever home so that the animal will be able to live the rest of its life loved, healthy, happy and safe.

Our Adoption Process is in place to ensure the needs of the animal are met, and that the animal is suitable for the adopting household.

How to Adopt

Adoption Enquiries can be submitted using the form below!

There are two ways you can apply to adopt an animal:

  1. you may apply for a specific animal; or
  2. you may provide us with information about your household and preferences/requirements of your ideal animal.

Either option, please ensure you include as much detail about your household (e.g. family members, other animals, work habits) and two contact methods so we can contact you (e.g. mobile, email).

Our coordinators assess each application carefully to find the best fit for the animal and adopting household. They work hard to ensure a perfect match.

This means your application may not be successful for a specific animal however; our coordinators will work with you to find your perfect match. This may also require that you be added to a contact list should your perfect match not yet be in our care.

The yard inspection (applicable for dog applications only)

Yard inspections are the next stage in the process. The yard inspection is designed to ensure the applicant’s yard is suitable, safe and secure for the dog(s) or type of dog(s) being considered.

The inspection is used to discuss the needs of both the dog(s) and the applicant/household and ensure the applicant has sufficient level of knowledge and experience to appropriately care for the dog(s).

Should the applicant’s yard be considered unsuitable (e.g. insufficient or low/unstable fencing)we will endeavour to work with applicants to address these issues.

Key points:

  • If you are renting, we require written landlord approval. The trial cannot start without it.
  • We will not approve your yard if it is unfenced (or sections thereof) or if you have an unfenced pool.

This process may take a few weeks to complete dependent on availability of the applicant, SAHARA volunteers and locality.

Precautions we take

The meet vs meet-to-trial (applicable for dog applications only)

Once the yard inspection has been approved, there are a couple options.

The meet (introduction to another dog)

We will arrange a time for our dog to meet your dog in a neutral location.

This type of meet is considered a standalone process and cannot form the start of the trial. This allows time to process the outcome of the meet and decide whether our dog is right for you and your dog.

Meet-to-trial (no other dogs involved)

The meet-to-trial is just that. We will arrange for you to meet our dog and you can choose whether you commence the trial immediately, or whether you need more time to consider whether our dog is right for you.

We do ask that you please consider your choice here carefully to minimise the disruption to our dog should you change your mind mid-trial.

The two-week trial

The adoption fee is paid prior to trial commencement.

Our two-week trial allows time for our animal to settle into your home. This is especially important if our animal is joining your family with existing pets.

We encourage you to let the animal settle for at least a week prior to forming any decisions either way. In the rare instance the trial is not successful for any reason, the adoption fee is fully refundable less a:

  • 50% of the adoption fee (for dogs)
  • 50% of the Adoption fee(for cats).
  • All fees have changed since 17/11/2020

Considerations

Before adopting, we ask that you consider the following:

  • A pet is a long commitment – in some cases 15-20 years… Have you really thought about it?
  • Will the pet be left on its own all day?
  • Do you have time to spend with your pet?
  • Will you have the patience to educate and train your pet?
  • Will you walk the dog even in bad weather?
  • Will you get annoyed when the pet steps into your house or car with dirty feet, or covers your clothing or furniture with fur?
  • Can anyone take care of your pet when you go on holidays, or are ill?
  • Can you meet unexpected vet bills?

Why do we go to great lengths to find the right home?

We want to find the most loving and suitable forever homes for these gorgeous animals so that they may never be abandoned or mistreated again.

The kindness one does for an animal may not change the world… but it will change the world for that one animal.

Re-Homing Your Pet

We understand the decision to re-home your pet is a hard one to make. You want the best for them, and so do we.

Our process to re-home your pet is in place to ensure a smooth transition for you, your pet and the adopting household.

Please be assured that our coordinators carefully assess all applications to find an adopting household that best suits the needs of your pet.

Please review our Adoption Process for further detail.

What to do next?

What information do we need?

For us to re-home your pet we need to know everything about them. We ask that you provide the following:

  • Photos. This may seem obvious but good photos are everything. We want to know all about their personality, so photos in different environments/situations will help us to place your pet. Are they good with dogs/cats/kids? Include a photo – or even better a video.

Note: It is also important to takphotos at face level rather than from above, so we can get a good idea of what your pet looks like.

  • Details of your pet. Their name, breed, age, gender, temperament, quirks, like/dislikes, good with dogs/cats/kids (what age?), and any known issues.
  • Your contact details. We require at least two methods of contact (i.e. mobile, email) and your residential address (where the pet is located).

Advertising your pet

Your agreement to re-home your pet through SAHARA provides us with exclusive advertising rights. This means that you cannot advertise your pet elsewhere. SAHARA goes through a considerable amount of effort to re-home your pet. Should we find your pet advertised elsewhere, we will withdraw your pet from our advertisement immediately.

We would like to further emphasise that advertising for free (or for a token price) through forums such as Gumtree may mean your pet is taken for baiting or breeding – we are sure you do not want this to be the fate of your pet.

Keeping in touch

We ask that you keep in regular contact with us and provide updates on your pet in the form of new photos and/or videos to assist us to re-home them.

Meets and trials

One of our volunteers will arrange with you to collect your pet to attend any meets and/or trials.

It is important to highlight that these may not work out, especially if the adopting household has another pet. In these instances, your pet will be returned to you and our coordinator will go back through applications and start the process again.

It is not an option for us to take your pet into foster care.

Please note…

  • A surrender fee of $100 may apply depending on your situation.
  • Re-homing your pet takes time! Please give us time to do the right thing by your pet and place them into the right home. Good photos, videos and information are key.

How do I apply?

If you would like us to re-home your pet please fill out the form below. Ensure you select the ‘re-homing process’ and provide the information and photos/videos requested above. Please include as much detail as possible.

*IMPORTANT*
We will not consider applications to re-home your pet without a photograph. Please send the photograph(s) at the same time as lodging your application.
